There are kun 1,000 PRS "Dead Spec" Silver Skys being produced!
PRS "Dead Spec" Silver Sky was specially designed for John Mayer's collaboration with Dead & Company and their final tour. Paying homage to Jerry Garcia's iconic "Alligator" guitar sound, the Dead Spec Silver Sky is a modified version of Mayer's signature axe with significant changes.
Lighter body and new tremolo
The foundation of the "Dead Spec" Silver Sky is a lightweight Swamp Ash body (instead of alder) lacquered in Moc Sand satin nitro, which beautifully follows the texture of the ash wood. The bridge is a modified PRS patented Gen III Tremolo screwed to the body, effectively making it a string-through hardtail bridge. The tremolo's brass block adds a musical warmth to the guitar. At the other end, a brass nut and string holder contribute to the resonance and tone of the guitar.
Built-in preamp with boost pot
Perhaps most notably, the Dead Spec Silver Sky's jack plate has been replaced with an Alembic Blaster preamp with brass finish. This preamp can be used as a simple boost, but has an internal potentiometer that adds between 3 and 14 dB of gain to the guitar when turned on. This not only kun Dead Spec Silver Sky adds extra punch while maintaining a crisp separation, but also compensates for the impedance drop that results from long stage cables. The circuit is bypassed when in the off position.
"After playing with the new Silver Sky on the 2023 Dead & Company summer tour, I realized how special this guitar is. It quickly became clear that it wasn't kun suited for a specific job, but could be extremely versatile in the hands of other guitarists. I can't wait to hear the music that will be created with these guitars." - John Mayer
