What is a cajon?

So, what exactly is a cajon? That's a good question. You might know it better as the drum kit. That's exactly what it is. A box you can drum on. Originally from Peru, it's now used in almost all kinds of music - even in Denmark.

It's easy to take with you to festivals with small stages and for intimate concerts in your living room.

The cajon is made of wood. All six sides of the box are made of wood. The front (which you strike) is typically plywood, while the remaining 5 sides are made of thicker wood. The top can be padded to make it more comfortable to sit on and there is a sound hole on the back of the box. That's how simple this instrument is built. Yet it can produce a more varied sound than you might think.

The playing technique makes a big difference to the sound. You can go from a dark and deep sound when you strike the box itself to a more rattling sound when you strike the edge of the box.

Jump on the bandwagon and buy a cajon. Get the rhythms going at the campsite, at recess and at the road party.
