Bass effects
Find your own sound with bass effects pedals. Deep bass is awesome on its own, but your life as a bass player just gets more fun with bass effects.
Bass effects - or bass effects pedals as they are also known - are perfect for those who want to experiment with their sound and find their own style. Effects pedals are more common for the guitar, but there are also a number of effects for bass - and they open up a whole new world of sound. With a simple pedal you can add distortion or chorus to your bass sound, just to name a few effects to start with.
Which bass effects should I choose?
With bass pedals, you can simply change the sound of your bass by experimenting with sound effects and tones. You can try the classic overdrive or other cool effects such as delay or echo. Effects do different things to the sound - you'll learn to recognize this as you experiment. Examples include "wah" which distorts the frequency ranges of the signal or "boost" which simply turns up the signal. You can also combine multiple pedals and effects to achieve a unique sound.
The best advice is to just play around with it. If you've heard a sound you'd like to try to emulate, your music retailer can probably help you identify the right bass effects. Otherwise, it's just a matter of trial and error.
If you're at a loss, you can start with overdrive, distortion and the king of bass effects: fuzz! EQ and chorus are also great to include. Then you're good to go. Make sure you use effects pedals that are designed for bass and not guitar. Otherwise you risk missing important frequency ranges in the effect.
How to get better at playing bass
If you want to get better at playing bass, there are several ways to go about it. It depends a lot on your level and your preferred learning method. You can always get in touch with a teacher. Search for "bass lessons" online and the options will appear.
Alternatively, you can try playing with others. Either with other bassists, practicing together and giving feedback to each other, or as a bassist in a band where you're backed up by other instruments. Playing with others can be a lot of fun and a great motivating factor.
