A good stand helps to look after your instrument so it lasts longer. We all know the awful sound of an instrument falling to the floor. Anyone with even a little love for instruments cringes at the sound. Because we know it's not good for the instrument.

When you put your instrument down, make sure it's stable in a stand designed for it - both at home and on tour.

Overview of instrument stands

Here's an overview of the most commonly used instrument stands:

Wall mount

This is a stand that is screwed to the wall and therefore typically seen in homes around the world. Wall mounts are most commonly used for stringed instruments such as guitar or bass. An easy and space-saving way to store your stringed instrument when you're not using it.

If you have a larger setup where you have more than one guitar or bass, consider a floor stand, which typically holds up to 5 stringed instruments. The floor stand is easy to fold up and take with you.

Stands for wind instruments

Wind instruments are different and so, of course, are their stands. Wind instrument stands can be divided into the following categories:

  • Stands for clarinets, flutes and soprano saxophones
  • Stands for trombones and trombones
  • Stands for alto and tenor saxophones
  • Stands for trumpets

Wind instrument stands are not intended as a permanent storage solution. Many would recommend that you disassemble your wind instrument, clean it and pack it away when you're not playing it. But we all know that unpacking and reassembling it and then packing it up again reduces your chances of practicing by many percent. It's so much easier to take a practice session if the instrument is on display.

If you maintain good maintenance practices around your instrument, you can use an instrument stand at home. But don't leave it there so long that it gathers dust. You'll either have to play some more or pack it away in the meantime.

So, wind instrument stands are mostly intended for use on stage, but can also be used at home with the right attention.

Stands for sheet music, microphones, tablets and speakers

You can find stands for almost anything that belongs on stage or in the studio. Microphone stands for virtually all types of microphones. Stands for sheet music and setlists - both the old-fashioned kind for paper sheet music and the more modern variant, which is a tablet holder with a clamp for mounting on the mic stand.
