The electric guitar is characterized by the electric sound we know from Hendrix and Clapton. Vibrations from the strings are converted into electrical signals that are transmitted through an amplifier into the sound of the electric guitar.

With an electric guitar, you can vary the sound in countless ways with delay, reverb, distortion and other effects. This makes it a relevant instrument in many different genres such as rock, blues, jazz and pop.

There's also a debate among geeks about how much the type of wood affects the sound. There's probably no doubt that the wood matters to the trained ear, but it's probably safest to say that how the wood affects the sound is a personal experience.

Perhaps you've seen an electric guitar with a resonance box and sound hole? It's characterized by the F-key shaped hole in the deck of the guitar, which signals that the body is hollow. This makes the wood sound in a different way.

Learn to play electric guitar at your own pace

If you're learning to play the electric guitar from scratch, it's important that you do it at your own pace. Often we want to learn everything at once and it's tempting to go too fast. But if you fail to get the basics right before moving on to the next step, there's a greater risk that you kun will learn things halfway and develop bad habits on top of that.

Start by learning basic techniques, fingerings and chords. You can start with 2-3 chords that are used in a song you know well. This is your first intermediate goal - when you can play that song, you've won.

Continue practicing basic techniques in context with each other. Practice switching between chords effortlessly. Stay on this step long enough for the music to start flowing. Practice makes perfect and when you can play your first song, it's all worth it.

If you take a systematic approach, you can quickly start building on your new skills and your progress will accelerate. Soon you'll be able to start your own band.

Remember to throw in an extra set of strings in the basket for your electric guitar.

Good luck on your musical journey.
