D'Addario XL are wound with nickel-plated steel and since their birth in the 60s, guitarists from all genres have chosen these strings for their superb intonation and distinctly clear sound.
EXL160BT Medium/Long: 050 067 090 120, Balanced Tension.
D'Adario's most popular electric bass strings. Nickel-plated steel provides a strong magnetic output and a comfortable, smooth playing surface that reduces premature wear of the frets.
EXL strings have a crisp, clear sound and perfect intonation.
The set consists of:
- XLB050 G.
- XLB067 D.
- XLB090 A.
- XLB120 E.
D'Addario Balanced Tension.
D'Addario Balanced tension strings are just what it sounds like, strings with balanced tension, balanced resistance. Just explained the opposite of what we string players always had before, unbalanced resistance.
In a regular fence set, all strings are different hard, have different tensions, different amounts of resistance to play with. For example, the A string in a regular 0.010 set tuned to A 440hz has a tension of 8.840 kg, the B string 6.980 kg, thin E 7.350 kg etc. Since you previously had nothing to choose from, it's not entirely obvious that you've thought about it before, you've just taken it for "that's how it is". So you have to compensate with different finger strength on bends and vibrato every time you change strings.
With D'Addario's BT strings, these differences have been smoothed out and it's basically the same resistance on all strings throughout the set. In a BT 0.010 set, the A string has a tension of 7.810 kg, the B string 7.530 kg and a thin E 7.360 kg. The equalization is done using the mathematical formulas to calculate what string thicknesses are needed to reach the same tension on all strings when tuned to pitch. That small change in thickness not only makes kun a string set that feels smoother, more balanced to play, vibrato and bends better and more secure because the hand doesn't have to compensate for different hardnesses in the strings when playing. It also makes a string set that rings more balanced between strings, which above all makes chord playing sound smoother without notes sticking out or drowning out.
Weight
What length (scale) of strings should I choose? Most electric basses have a long scale, but of course there are exceptions.
Measure on the bass side, when the string is at pitch, the distance between the inside of the ball and the top saddle.
- Short scale: up to 32".
- Medium scale: 32" up to 34".
- Long scale 34" up to 36".
- Super long: 36" up to 38".
