EXL220BT Super Light / Long Scale .040–.060–.075–.095, Balanced Tension
D’Addario’s most popular electric bass strings. Nickel-plated steel provides a strong magnetic output and a smooth, comfortable playing surface that reduces premature fret wear.
EXL strings are known for their distinct, clear tone and precise intonation.
This set includes:
• XLB040 G
• XLB055 D
• XLB070 A
• XLB095 E
D’Addario Balanced Tension
D’Addario Balanced Tension strings are exactly what the name suggests: strings with balanced tension and even resistance. In simple terms, the opposite of what bass players have traditionally had—unbalanced resistance.
In a standard string set, each string has a different tension and therefore a different playing feel. For example, in a typical .010 set tuned to A440, the A string may have a tension of 8.840 kg, the B string 6.980 kg, and the high E string 7.350 kg. Since there were previously no alternatives, this was simply accepted as “the way it is,” meaning players had to compensate with different finger pressure when performing bends and vibrato across strings.
With D’Addario BT strings, these differences are evened out, resulting in nearly uniform resistance across the entire set. In a BT .010 set, the A string has a tension of 7.810 kg, the B string 7.530 kg, and the high E string 7.360 kg.
This balance is achieved by using mathematical calculations to determine the precise string gauges required to reach consistent tension when tuned to pitch. These subtle gauge adjustments not only create a more even and balanced playing feel, but also improve vibrato and bending, as the fretting hand no longer has to compensate for varying string stiffness.
The result is also a more balanced overall tonal response between strings, allowing chords to ring more evenly, without notes that stand out or get buried.
Scale Length
Which scale length should I choose? Most electric basses are Long Scale, but there are exceptions. Measure along the bass side of the string when tuned to pitch, from the inner edge of the ball end to the nut.
• Short Scale: up to 32"
• Medium Scale: 32" to 34"
• Long Scale: 34" to 36"
• Super Long Scale: 36" to 38"
