A tongue drum is, as such, a fairly new instrument, although it is inspired by various ethnic and historical instruments. Tongue drums are also known as tank drums, as the first known versions were made from small propane tanks before musical instrument manufacturers began mass-producing them in the form we know today.
A tongue drum is a hollow cylindrical drum with blades cut into the top of the drum. When the drum is struck with a mallet or your fingers, the blade vibrates and produces sound waves that create a unique, musical and very pleasant sound.
Tongue drums have a very pleasant, soothing and meditative sound that is suitable for music therapy and as a musical instrument for relaxation and meditation.
You can sit it on your lap or you can have it in front of you on a table or similar.
