Where do drums come from?

When we talk about drums, many people think of a classic drum kit. But before the drum kit emerged as an instrument in its own right, individual drums were used individually in different contexts. Typically in military and parade music. The drums come from different parts of the world. The bass drum and snare drum were originally used in the European military. Cymbals were developed in Turkey and China, where they have been used in both classical music and the military over the years.

In the early 1900s, New Orleans was a hub for many different musical cultures. At first, drums were grouped together on stage for practical reasons. The small stages were cramped. But when one man operates multiple rhythm instruments on his own, it suddenly gives the music a whole new rhythmic backbone. A rhythmic anchor or center, if you will. It had a huge impact on the development of rhythmic music and the drum kit we know today.
