The Vox UL 710 is a rare and historically significant tube amplifier produced by JMI Vox in 1966 as part of the short-lived UL Series. Designed as the successor to the AC10SRT, the UL 710 represents a transitional period in Vox history, bridging the classic AC-era designs and the company’s later move toward solid-state technology.
Unlike the larger hybrid models in the UL Series, the UL 710 is a fully tube-driven, hand-wired amplifier, maintaining traditional Vox construction methods while incorporating a more modern visual design. Features include an anodized aluminum front panel and integrated panel lighting above the control knobs.
The amplifier is a single-channel design with dual inputs and offers controls for volume, bass, middle, and treble, as well as built-in tremolo (speed and depth) and reverb. A dedicated boost switch increases preamp gain, providing additional drive and flexibility.
Tube complement consists of three ECC83 (12AX7) preamp tubes, two EL84 power tubes, and an EZ81 tube rectifier, delivering the classic warm, dynamic Vox tone. A five-position rotary voltage selector on the rear panel allows operation on different mains voltages worldwide.
The UL 710 features Vox’s proprietary phono-pickup-based reverb system, carried over from the AC10SRT. This in-house design was developed to avoid licensing fees associated with Accutronics spring reverb units. While more subtle in depth compared to contemporary Fender reverbs, it offers a unique character and can become sensitive to feedback at higher volume levels.
The open-back speaker cabinet is fitted with two 10" Celestion speakers and features the distinctive trapezoid-shaped Vox logo in white molded plastic, a visual departure from earlier gold-letter Vox logos. Several cabinet variants were produced, including versions with adjustable swivel side stands or chrome “Fender-style” tilt-back legs.
At the time of its release in 1966, the UL 710 was priced significantly higher than the AC10 models, contributing to modest sales in the UK. As a result, a large portion of production was distributed through mainland Europe. Today, the UL 710 is regarded as a highly desirable vintage amplifier, valued for its tone, build quality, and place in Vox history.
