The clarinet is often seen in classical arrangements, but it has also played a major role in the world of jazz over the years. It is a versatile instrument due to the wide range of notes.
The history of the clarinet is long, dating back to around 1690. You get the short version here. It wasn't until much later that the clarinet was developed into a serious instrument. Stop keys were added and experiments were made with the number of finger holes. In 1839, the instrument underwent its last significant changes, resulting in the clarinet we know today.
What is the difference between an oboe and a clarinet?
The oboe and clarinet are similar, but not identical. The oboe is smaller than the clarinet. They sound different and also tune differently - the oboe is a C instrument while the clarinet is a Bb instrument. The oboe uses vibrato. The clarinet does not.
