Bass guitar

The deep tones of the bass guitar are used in virtually all music. We have both 4-string and 5-string electric basses. However, the 4-string is the most commonly used and the one we recommend for beginners. The advantage of the 5-string is that the extra deep string gives extra bottom to the music.

The electric bass has a short history. It was invented by Fender in 1951 as an attempt to simplify the double bass. There are bass guitars with as few as two strings and as many as twelve, but the typical electric bass has 4 strings, which is the equivalent of the bottom four strings of a guitar, but tuned an octave lower.

Together with the drums, the electric bass is the foundation of rhythmic music. Bass and drums together create a unique rhythm that keeps the basic rhythm and is used in many different genres. In rock music, the bass is quite laid back and slow. But in funk, it's more forward in the sound. Common to all genres is the collaboration between bass and drums - this is where the basic rhythm is established, even when changing time signatures along the way.

Which electric bass should I choose?

The bass guitar is an underrated instrument. To the untrained ear, most bass guitars can sound similar. But there's a big difference between the different types and when choosing your bass, there are a few things to consider to make sure you make the right choice.

Does the instrument fit you size-wise? Sizes vary greatly as both the body and neck can vary. The thickness of the neck can also vary. Stand with the electric bass for a while before you buy it to make sure it feels comfortable in your hands.

If you buy a used electric bass, make sure it stays in tune over time. This isn't a big issue with electric basses as the strings are strong and relatively stable, but it's worth paying attention to.

Similarly, it's a good idea to test the electronics - whether you're buying new or used. Because the electric bass is not hollow, it makes no natural sound. The electronics are responsible for all the sound, so it should play.

Not sure what to choose? Search for an electric bass that has been best in test. Sometimes it's smart to lean on others who have more experience and a better understanding of the capabilities of different instruments.

Pros and cons of the electric bass

Electric bass is a matter of taste. Here are some of the more objective pros and cons of the instrument that might help you decide if the electric bass is for you.

Pros:

  • You get a basic knowledge of rhythm. You might not think it, but the bass is almost more about rhythm than any other instrument. If you learn to play bass, you'll be way ahead if you want to learn to play another instrument later on.
  • It's relatively easy to learn. Especially on a 4-string bass, which is also the most commonly used.
  • The deep tones of the electric bass are some of the sexiest. I think we can all agree on that.

Disadvantages:

  • The electric bass can be tough to play. The thick strings require muscle strength in the fingers. But you can train for that.
  • It can easily get boring if you play alone. Although there are some great solo bassists, the electric bass is probably primarily a supporting instrument and much more fun when played with other instruments. But if you have a band or a bunch of siblings you can force into music lessons, it can be a lot of fun.
