Ibanez has been a market leader in 7-string guitars for many years.
The RG7421EX is a 7-string model from the Ibanez Standard Series, featuring a fixed F107 bridge. It's a highly versatile guitar capable of much more than simply delivering heavy, low-end riffs.
The guitar features a 3-piece Wizard II-7 maple neck with a standard 648 mm (25.5") scale length. The meranti body provides an even frequency response across the entire tonal spectrum. Its balanced tonal characteristics make it particularly well suited for high-gain sounds, keeping notes tight and focused without becoming muddy or losing definition.

The guitar is equipped with two Ibanez Quantum 7 humbuckers, controlled via a 5-way pickup selector switch with master volume and master tone controls.
5-Way Pickup Selector Functions
* Series Wiring
In series mode, both coils of the humbucker are connected in series, allowing the pickup to deliver its full output and intended tonal character. This is the standard wiring configuration described in the manufacturer's specifications. In this mode, the pickup is fully hum-cancelling and noise-free.
** Coil Split
When a humbucker is coil-split, one of its two coils is deactivated, effectively turning the pickup into a single-coil. This reduces output while producing a brighter, more open, and more dynamic tone with tighter, better-defined bass response.
A split humbucker is no longer hum-cancelling on its own. However, in switch position 2, the active coil is combined with the other pickup in a way that preserves the hum-cancelling effect.
Coil splitting is particularly well suited for clean and mildly overdriven tones but can also add clarity and definition to high-gain sounds. Which coil remains active depends on the pickup's orientation and affects the resulting tone—the coil closest to the neck produces a warmer sound, while the coil closest to the bridge delivers a brighter tone.
*** Parallel Wiring
In parallel mode, the humbucker's two coils are connected in parallel rather than in series.
This produces lower output, a clearer and more open tone, and a tighter low end than series wiring. The exact output reduction depends on the pickup's design, but parallel wiring generally provides a more dynamic response, less compression, and greater sensitivity to picking dynamics.
This makes parallel mode especially useful for clean, crunch, and lightly overdriven tones, as well as for adding clarity and definition to a high-output humbucker without sacrificing its full-bodied character.
Unlike coil splitting, parallel wiring retains the pickup's hum-cancelling properties, so it remains quiet and free from hum.
